Fundus Image processing

Currently there is unprecedented pressure on the health care providers which has given rise to many innovations in portable , IoT and cloud base diagnostic tools. The hardware innovations are primarily focussed on ease with which a scan could be performed under the supervision of a trained para medical profession. These scanned images can safely be uploaded to the cloud to be analysed manually by a senior medical professional or to be auto diagnosed using an AI tool. These developments have also ensured that such portable medical devices can be utilized in health camps in remote areas for mass screening saving time and money of the patients who otherwise had to bigger cities to avail such scanning. Only if the diagnosis is positive the patients may visit the senior medical professional for manual dignosis and any treatment if requirred.

Every five seconds one person in the world goes blind, 20 percent of this can be avoidable from preventable conditions and another 60 percent is treatable so that sight is restored. Only with mass screening of the Fundus on a yearly basis such cases can be detected early. The Thailand government in 2020 had set an annual goal to screen 60 percent of the diabetic patients for Diabetic Retinopathy, which can cause blindness if not detected early. But with around 4.5 million patients to only 200 retinal specialists—roughly double the ratio in the US-clinics are struggling to meet the target and patient has to wait for about 6 to 8 weeks to get the diagnostic reports. In India only 6 million out of 72 million diabetes patients are screened for Diabetes Retinopathy. The enormous pressure on the healthcare providers can only be eased with Artificial Intelligence based solution.

One such diagnostic tool is the fundus image processing which can detect following health conditions of a person

  • Retinopathy.
  • Hypertension Retinopathy.
  • Glaucoma.
  • Biometric characteristics of fundus image.
  • Anemic condition.
